The way it was; Fastnet '79 and '81

Sandette rounded the Fastnet rock and finished second in class during the race of '81, but in the ill fated '79 race she was dismasted at 0400 hrs, 40 miles from the rock.

This was the view two hours later.

Jan Krijgsman and his crew made a jury mast from the spinaker and jockey poles, hoisted the No 3 genoa and sailed in to Penzance after a further 40 hours.

I'm sure there is more to this story. Perhaps Jan will add some further comments.

Culebra heads South

Dear Adrian,
I have just decided. Culebra is going south – to Med. It has been very difficult decision for me. I have spent all my sailing life on Baltic Sea and North Sea. But this year I have been defeated by North Sea weather. In spring we started with my co-skipper from Lemmer (The Netherlands) and visited Ramsgate, Queenborough and London and all the time it was raining and forecast 6-7 occasionally 8. And it was true forecast. During summer holidays we were planning to sail from Lemmer to Chanel Islands and came back to the Netherlands but instead of sailing we spent over a week in Scheveningen waiting for winds other than south west 7-8. When the gales finished the rains begun. As usually. So I was able to achieve only Dunkerque and in raining July morning decided to go south.

Do you know about any UFO 34 which has sailed through French canals to Med ? Official draught of canals is 1,8 m. In theory (according to drawings) draught of UFO 34 is 1,83 m , but my Culebra has 1,95 – I took her on land in Dunkerque and measured. I will start from Dunkerque and try to dig up through canals but probably I will have to execute beck up option - means lorry option. So I am prepared for loading my boat on the lorry in Pont-l’Eveque (60400 France) or Montereau-Fault-Yonne (71130 France) and transport her by land to Chalon-Sur-Saone (71100 France) - through the shallowest part of French canals. Lorry option is not the cheapest one but I have no time for sailing around Europe. If you know anybody who has executed this way by UFO 34 please let me know. If not I will tell you in October if it was possible for UFO to sail all the way through French canals or lorry option through the shallowest canals was necessary.

I am just considering fitting anchor on the bow roller on my UFO and anchor windlass. It may be useful in Med. Do you know any UFO which has anchor on the bow roller and anchor windlass? If so would you like to arrange for me photos of the bow and anchor hatch ? I am just considering possibilities of installing the anchor and anchor windlass and will be very appreciate for any tips.

I also sent a mail to Anthony Landamore with the same question but no answer yet.

The SANDETTIE is still in Port Saint Louis, where I go every two month to work on, new perpex windows were fitted, led lightning installed, water & pumps systems renewed...

Fridge compressor is planned and now, working on the fitting of an innerstay for a high aspect jib and stormsail if necessary. All to the cockpit is the main target to improve singlehanded sailing.

29th of may to 6th of june is booked with Ryanair !

Have you read Jean Van der Linden's account of Sandettie's near swamping during the 1979 Fastnet Race?
On Renegade we keep the liferaft, a spare anchor or two, the outboard motor, mop, boathook and countless other bits of boating necessaries (junk) in the port side cockpit locker, which is accessed by lifting the hinged lid that forms the port side seat. This lid can be fastened with a hasp catch and locked with a padlock if necessary. We do this when Renegade is left unattended to prevent theft of the valuable items mentioned above. At sea we take off the padlock.
But, when Sandette was rolled over during the Fastnet Race, the locker lid openned and the boat was partially swamped. So, something is needed to keep the lid closed, but not the padlock!

Sandettie's saga and other news from Jean Van der Linden

Hi Adrian,
I went for one week to Port Saint Louis near Marseille to work on the newly buyed Sandettie, cleaning, sorting out the contents, measuring, looking to make her single handed and taking notes…

My quest for info about her past brought me to the discovery of interesting things and contacts with different people, all very enthusiast to help or to speak about rememberings, and there are some important ones !

Herewith some details and if some one of you know more or can correct, don’t hesitate to mail me.

First of all, Adrian, can you please convert the boats name in the owners list into Sandettie, without the digit ”2” ?
Indeed, Jan Krijgsman, a Ducht guy ordered this boat as first owner and named her like this, as all his boats received the same name. Now he just sold his Swan and went over to a motor boat to enjoy a long trip on the French rivers, he is over the 70 springs !

Jan did the Fastnet with Sandettie, crewed with 5 french guys, and had a very hard time like all boats in that event …
45 miles from the rock, they were rolled over, the port cockpithatch opening upside down, cubes of seawater gets in, exploding the doghouse wall and filling the Sandettie nearly to the height of the chart table, the mast was broken and two guys injured but every body still on board and alife!!

The two spi-poles and a staysail were used to build up a emergency rigging and they headed to Lands End where a fisher boat towed them to Penzance.

Loïc Le Boulaire, one of the 6 on board, planning to buy a sailing boat decided touching land that it will be an UFO 34 and bought the UFORUS in Scotland !

And here some surprise :
This boat is still on the owners list but… rest, broken on the Floor of the Gulf of Biscay… after a encounte with a bigger vessel !! The owner to whom Loïc sold her was rescued after this accident but seems that this was not his First (near)encounter on sea !

The Sandettie was re-rigged and repaired fully (I think by Landamores ?? to be confirmed) and Jan sold her in ’82 to Dr. Bouilland of Lorient who is now 88. He told me enthusiastic that he sailed her in many races with his sons before selling her again to a certain Georges Michelin in ‘85.

Mr Michelin called her AUGUSTA and sailed 15 nice years from Groix island for fun and some races (Nantes – Setubal ’89 – 10th of 40 into 40 Knots winds). He let her in 1999 to X-Yacht when buying a X-412 he still owns.

After that, the Sandettie was sold by X-Yachts to Captain De Mik (2000 ?))from who I bought her, he sailed in 2002 from Brest to Marseille where she stays up to now, dry sinse +/- 5 years.

That’s her story, I contacted the ’97 crew and will get some documents and pictures of her, including one taken from a heli or plane after the roll over…
You understand I am sure why I want to keep origial her name.

Three questions :
- Can some one tell me where to find the hull number, I did’nt succeed in that…
- All info about vane experience on the UFO 34 is welcome (with brand name)
- Do some body know if Colvic used powder bounded CSM (chop srand mat) or emulsion bounded mat ?
Further I sent a mail to Landamores to fid out if they can find some more traces of the Sandettie story.

I wish to thank here Hubert Terentiew ( Culebra 3) and Erik Kiekens (Dr No) Chris Tsirikidis (Meander), Richard Kemp, Luc Bool (Anda), and others for theyr kind help or hospitality, as well as all of those who mailed (or will mail) me with info.

Also looking for some advice re spinnaker setup. Shadow is equipped with a babystay and has a slide and spinnaker car on the mast. Due to the babystay we can't do a dip pole jibe so we end-to-end. This can be a bit of a handful when there's any significant amount of wind about and is really a two man job.We're thinking of going to a 2 pole setup and wonder whether anybody has done this themselves and can offer any advice.Would also be interested to hear how other people setup the jockey pole. We clip to ring on side of mast then tie to shroud, should we also be limiting upward movement perhaps tie to toerail???Any advice would be appreciated.

Olfrygt Wins the ½ Ton Cup 10th April 2010

The ½ ton cup is held each year by Claremont & Hillarys Yacht clubs. It consist of 2 offshore races. The 1st race is from Fremantle up to Hillarys (Mariners Cup for Div 1and the ½ ton cup for Div 2). The race back on Sunday is the Shepherdess Cup.

The events date back to the early 1970’s, and were inaugurated by Alan Bond. He needed to have a yachting regatta to qualify for sending a 12m challenge to Rhode Island. This eventually led to him winning the Cup in 1983.

But Saturday was our moment of glory, and

we were somewhat weary on Sunday.

We also beat all the Div 1 boats on IRC.

Hughie was not kind for the return race, and we could not win the double.

Hi Adrian,

I am glad to tell that I would like to join the UFO owners, my search is completed bythe buy of former “Sandettie 2”.“Maria Simone” on the papers since 14/02/2007, but never sailed under that name.This 1976 build UFO 34 is fitted by Landamores and is in general good shape.She is standing dry in Marseilles since a a year of five, I will refit it for a long time sail in the Mediteranean and plan to go West (singlehanded mainly) after that. Am 62 now and stopping to work as soon as possible!

The Sandettie 2 seems to be imported to France from the Netherlands as former “Augusta” in ’81 (22th of june - bought by a certain mr Michelin ??) and renamed as “Sandetie 2”.Willem de Mik, (from which I bought it) and his wife bought it in the early 2000th.That’s all known for the moment, perhaps there where other owners in between…? I have to find out.

I want to re-rig it completely, (info welcome) seems that the Sandettie 2 has been dismasted once, the actual mast, supposed a new one, is in very good shape.The engine is a Wortham Blake BMC based and as I worked for Leyland Truck & Bus, I am glad to meet this brand again !If UFO fans could give some extra info, I will appreciate it a lot, all documents have been withhold (read stolen) by a brooker ( see http://ufo34news.blogspot.com/2007/02/ufo-34-for-sale-formerly-sandettie-2.html ) Willem overhanded a case with documents and history, Europe Yachting kept them !!!If you can help me with copys of UFO document, drawnings, or whatever delivered with each ship, I would be very happy. Olfrygt at Geographe Bay Race Week Feb 2010

Olfrygt made the voyage down to Geographe Bay race week, some 100 miles south of Perth. It is by far the biggest yachting regatta in WA (~115 yachts), and the place to be seen for any serious racer. The huge regatta is always held in the last week of February. It is hosted by Geographe Bay Yacht Club, just east of Busselton, and on the doorstep of the famous Margaret river wine growing & surfing country!

Race divisions cover the top end IRC, through to YAH, premier cruising, JAM, sports boats & multi hulls.

We raced in IRC. The competition is full-on. We came a very respectable 8th overall, including two 3rd places – Not bad for an old displacement boat up against modern designs!. Racing is a combination of windward-leeward courses, and passage races (We hate the reaching courses!). The social scene & camaraderie after the days racing is spectacular.

Watch out for next years event! :-)

The Algal Bloom race is an annual event held on Gage Roads, near Fremantle (Perth WA). It was initiated 10 yeas ago when unseasonal rain, heavy nutrient loads & warm weather turned the Swan River into a huge “Algal Bloom”. The river was closed for 2 weeks to all activities for health reasons. So the river based yacht clubs banded together & held a race on the ocean instead! A pleasant 18kts breeze, 4-5’ seas, 30deg temperature – Wouldn’t you all love to be here!

Hey Adrian,

Here’s some great shots of us in the 2009 Fremantle harbour race. 30 yachts by invitation only, short tight windward / leeward course 20kts of breeze with yachts going every which way, all in a corridor 400m wide full of ships, power boats & other yachts! Most full on race we’ve ever done! Great viewing from along the docks!! We were the smallest, slowest yacht, starting near the front. It’s a handicap race, with the maxis starting last to mow us all down. In it’s 30 year history, I believe we were only the 2nd UFO to be invited to compete.

I don’t think there is anything like it anywhere else in the world – A major yacht race in a confined space with spectators lining every vantage point.

I came across your website just after buying 'Cuan Venturer' (ex. 'True Venturer') two and a half years ago and have been meaning to contact you. I'm only getting round to it now!
To update your records we have 3 UFO 34's in Strangford Lough (N.I.).
'Cuan Venturer', a '77 Landamores, 'Facinator' owned by Chris Curran of Portaferry Sailing Club, a home fitted UFO, and 'Sundowner' from Strangford Lough Yacht Club, (will forward you the owner's name when I can find it out).
I've attached a few photos of 'Venturer' sailing.

I have nice sailing moments behind, Sigma 33, Rino 36, North sea, Mediteranean, Ionian and Adriatic... Looking for the buy of a boat for a mainly solo, long trip... Stable, solid, fun, sure & safe and limited budget are the main parameters! Ufo 34 is a favorite... Plan to go to south of France and Uk to look at some. Info, advices and suggestions are welcome. Hi UFO 34 owners.

My boat Close Encounters, which I've owned for about 13 years, is moored in Hobart, Tasmania. I used to race her frequently, but for the last 5 years or so I've just used her for cruising. I sail her almost every weekend, and each summer go on cruises for 3-5 weeks around the Tasmanian coast, sometimes with family, sometimes with friends, and sometimes solo. I've covered close to 30,000 miles in her now, and haven't yet found a boat anywhere near my price range to match her for ease-of-use, comfort and toughness when the going gets rough.She was built in Freemantle Western Australia in 1985 and fitted out for the 1986 Melbourne Boat Show. The shipwright did a pretty good job and she's very comfortable below.She's rigged for single-handed sailing except I don't have any furling gear yet, as the old racing sails are still in good condition. She's fitted with a 24HP 3 cylinder Yanmar and a 300 litre fuel tank, although this doesn't get used much as I prefer to sail her as long as there's even a sniff of breeze.I've recently added an electric anchor winch and replaced all the original instruments and the auto-pilot I installed when I bought her. Plans for this summer include a 3 week cruise to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia.

New hatch for Dr No

Too sunny in Madeira

Filipe Assunção, skipper of Jackpot, has written from Madeira. He wants to know whether anyone has a design for a bimini, or has fitted one. In these northern latitudes any exposure to the sun is seen as a bonus, but perhaps biminis are more common in Australia, so please add a comment,or contact Filipe directly if you have bimini experience.

He also wants to fit a spray hood. Renegade's spray hood is narrower than some I have seen and we usually take it down when sailing, because it completely blocks the helmsman's view forward. Does anyone out there have a spray hood which they are happy with?

My name is Theo Hunink and I'm sailing on the "Thema" formaly "Rose" an Ufo 34 from Holman&Pye and build by Colvic.
First my compliments of the "renegade site" and the "Ufo News", wich I 'found on the internet.
My English is not so well, so sorry for faillures that I make, but I'm trying .

The "Thema ist the boat is of very close frend of mine, and we are sailing it thogether. He bought the boat in 2006 and we saild the boat for two months
then we stripped the hull and coated it with epoxy. The deck was stripped and repaird and we build an steeringwheel on it.
After five months we could sail again and renamed it to "Thema".
Our Port of registry is in Urk (The Netherlands) at the IJselmeer, an very nice place to sail and one hour driving from our home.
This winter we are working at the inside of the boat, new seeling, heater and navigation instruments to make everything so confeniant as possible.

The reason why I 'm writing is I want to know more about the Ufo 34, do you have any documentation of the builder or specifications of performance?

Brandybottle competes in RTYC Triangle race

RTYC Triangle race 2008Hi everyone.Good to see the site is still being updated. Brandybottle took part in the Royal Torbay Yacht Club Triangle race this year, first time for me but not sure if she has done it before with Roger and Rudi. We did not do too bad on our first outing with a 2nd in class for leg 1. 6th for leg 2 and 4th for leg 3. Sadly we did not manage to get amongst the proper prizes but there's always next time. The wind conditions where lively across the Celtic sea following a windless start in Torbay hard on the wind with 30 kts plus towards Kinsale. The fore stay bottle screw gave up about 17 nm from kinsale but fortunately we keep a spare and after a short stint on the foredeck John, my crew managed to replace it. Kinsale to Tregieur was another bashing with the winds in the high 20's again but Brandybottle looked after us well. Tregieur to Torbay was shaping up for more of the same with neither John or myself looking forward to another session of walking around the backs of the seats but as we left the winds dropped to around 22-25 kts allowing us to free off the wind a bit and pick up some speed.All told another good outing for the boat and myself. Will be fitting a wind vane for the next race though - Cant be doing with this hand steering game.Good sailingPaddy.

She is generally in poor condition but her new owner is enthusiastic and has several sons to help him.I help run the Hurley Owners Association. As I'm sure you know Hurley Marine moulded several prototypes for the design of the UFO 31, 34 and SHE 31 and SHE 36.Colvic Craft produced the mouldings after that. I recently helped set up the SHE Owners Association. SHE were Hurley agents in the Solent.The Hurley designer Ian Anderson designed the Colvic Countess range and was apprenticed to Jack Holman of Uphams boatyard, Brixham. Jack started Marine Glass who moulded lots of Holman and Pye designs. Afternoon All,I recently discovered this website & blog, and will spend some time sifting through all of it.My busines partner & I are based in Perth, Western Australia, and bought a UFO34 nearly 3 years ago. It was in sad shape, and we spent way too much (as always!) getting her back in tip-top shape.She is now called "Olfrygt" (Google it for a laugh), sail number RF184, based out of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. Off course we have a million & one stories about her refit, and the various racing & cruising adventures we have had since then.The UFO34 was a very poluar boat here in Perth from the 70's to 80's - I know a few dozen here at least. DIY re-rigging your UFO

I am currently re-rigging Tarraleah a UFO of 29 years. She was launched in Fremantle Western Australia with her mast in a tabernacle. We are her second owners and have sailed to Lord Howe I. twice, a voyage of about 3-4 days, as well as to the Whitsunday Is. This is her second re-rig, the first occuring after we dismasted 50 nM off the east coast of New South Wales as the result of the starboard cap shroud U-bolt failing. We salvaged the mast (somewhat bent) by winching it aboard and motored back to a marina. It is now 16 years since the new mast and rigging and I plan to keep the re-rigging cost down by sourcing the terminals and wire and doing the re-rigging myself.What I would like some knowlegeable UFO owner to tell me is why the internal supporting rigging that is part of the frame that supports the U bolts is of such a small size in comparison to the external rigging. On Tarraleah the lower shrouds are 8 mm, the caps are 7 mm and these inner "cables" are 5.5 mm! The diagrams from Holman and Pye specify 1/4". I would have thought that the load on the U bolts would be transmitted to these cables or is that the frame takes the load? If so, why have the inner rig?My second problem is withdrawing the forestay up the foil of the furler. The SS pin that holds the rigging toggle is frozen in the mast bracket. I have belted it with a hammer but no movement so far. I was about to take a butane torch to it today but the weather turned nasty and I will wait for better conditions. I can't see anyway of getting it out unless I make a press or something to push the pin out. Not the easiest place to work, standing on a rope ladder 10 m plus up in the sky.

It's good to browse through the entries in yacht club visitors' books. You come across entries from sailors from around the corner, or across the ocean and every entry suggests a story; well every voyage is tale waiting to be told, or that's what I think anyway.

Last week Renegade was in Ramsgate and, as the crew was taking modest refreshment in the Royal Temple Yacht Club, I chanced to see that Hard Seed had visited in August. Now Hard Seed appears on the UFO List and is registered in Chatham, but I didn't recognise the name of the skipper. Has there been a change of ownership? UFO News must be told!

I'm looking for a Top Cap for Lewmar 43, like in the pictures.

I'd like to know, where can I buy one or two units, because I lost one falling into the sea, and the other will be for a spare.

The measures are 32.10 mm inside, and 79 mm outside.

I asked Lewmar England, and they told me theres no Top Caps for this winches as they are too old.

So, Im looking for one or two in second hand, or any chandlery that has it, in his old stock.

I'm looking at an un launched UFO 34 hull. It's an unfinished self build project. What is concerning me is that the keel appears to be a separate moulding that has been attached to the body of the hull. Internally the fibre mat appears to be continuous so I would imagine that this is from when Colvic moulded her. I thought that the hull was moulded as one piece in a split (along the centre line) mould.

Do you know what a bare hull should look like around the keel / hull joint ?
Were the keels moulded separately and then included in the hull mould ? Is this indicative of serious damage or to be expected ?

By the way, "Eupho" is moored at Watchet Harbour Marina in West Somerset. I've had many great sailing adventures in her including the Hebrides and Ireland. I am looking for help and information and wondered if you could help.. I am currently looking to buy a yacht and saw Ackray at Hartlepool.. I am now interested in Ufo 34 to buy..

Information I am looking for is:

Do you know of anymore for sale , Ackray is expensive and I need others to compare.. To see why its so special.

Is there any difference with the Hazelwood built ones ?

Do UFOs sail ok if you fit them with furling headsail..

And any where else I can get information about UFO and what to look for when buying one .

Good and bad as to what to look for when buying.

Boarding ladder

Has anyone solved this difficult problem? What sort of ladder is best for climbing onto a UFO 34 from the water when you have been for a swim either voluntarily or by accident?

On Renegade we have tried a rigid metal one, which hooked over the toe rail (difficult to stow when not in use) and a rope ladder with plastic rungs, which stowed OK, but the rungs are narrow and hurt bare feet.

Tide table error for Brest and Oban

There is a serious error in the tidal information for Brest (page 400) and Oban in the Reeds PBO Small Craft 2006 Almanac. We are trying to alert as many mariners as possible to this, and are asking yacht clubs, marinas, harbourmasters, chandleries and bookshops to display a notice to this effect. could you possibly help me out please?

first an easy question, we changed our boat name to Lolo in stead of hakuna mutata, could you change that on the ufo list?

The other question is more difficult. I have an UFO34 with a 38Hp thornycroft engine, I guess original so about 30 years old now. i seem to be losing some oil in my cooling water, so I was wondering whether you have heard of this, of if you know a place were I could find books on this type of engine. I more information is needed I could send it over to you, since all my documentation is on board and i don't have it at hand here at home. Maybe we could post this question on the site, but I don't seem to be able to log a message anymore (or rather, I don't know how to do it)
