UFO 34 Fascinator competes in new Year Race on the Clyde

Fairlie Yacht Club NEW YEAR’S RACE 2006

Good Craic, Lemarac, Cara of Kip, Fascinator* and Whirligig all made it to the start line for the 2006 New Year Race at Kip.  The “Le Mans” style running start from the Marina office to the waiting boats proves as popular as ever.

The light North Westerly breeze filled in nicely about ½ an hour into the race and it was Boyd Tunnocks Moody 38 “Lemarac” the current holder of the “Kip Marina Trophy” who was 1st to the turning mark at Skelmorlie Bank.  There was then a good beat up to Warden Bank and despite a poor spinnaker drop “Good Craig” pulled through “Lemarac” and opened up some space from “Cara”.  These 3 had moved away from the rest of the field until “Cara” sailed into a flat spot between two wind banks and despite “white caps” ahead and astern were left becalmed for around 15 minutes.  “Fascinator” and “Whirligig” were virtually alongside before “Cara” got going again but despite another good spinnaker run up to Warden Bank buoy, the “Teacake” boys in “Lemarac” had done enough, caught “Good Craic” on connected time and held off “Whirligig” by 3 minutes to retain the Kip Marina Trophy.

Well, it’s not the winning, but taking part that counts. Mind you I was glad to have my feet up in front of the fire on 1st January 2006. Call me a fair weather sailor if you like, but January’s for skiing, not sailing.
